Maxi-Cosi Pria 70 Review: Best Convertible Car Seat Under $400

I’m sure many of you have seen or heard about convertible car seats whose producer promises that the product is good for babies as well as toddlers, and they provide an insert that is supposed to position the baby in the seat and keeping safe. Well, yes these are true, but the only problem is that the harnesses are not good enough to provide proper protection for babies because you cannot tighten them enough or sometimes it can happen that they are too tight. Now this problem seems to fad in the past because Maxi Cosi Pria 70 has a new technology that provides higher protection for your little ones. It’s called TinyFit, which is basically a seat-in-a-seat and as the name shows it is suitable for the smallest children.

Earlier this seat could only be bought with the insert for baby positioning; now it is available on market without the insert, but according to experts this version is not appropriate for infants. If you choose the seat including the insert is not much more expensive and basically you get a multi-purpose seat that is good for your child from 3 months old until he is 3 years. Of course if he doesn’t reach the height or weight limit of the seat.

The seat has two basic positions, the rear facing position, which is available from 4lbs until your kids reach 40lbs then you have to convert into a forward facing position which has the weight limit of 70 lbs. Although forward facing position is available from 22lbs of weight, experts advise to keep children seated in rear facing position because it has the lowest risk in case of a crash.

Maxi Cosi Pira 70 has an unbelievable 12 slots for harness and if you order it with the TinyFit insert it has 3 more slot for the insert individually and that is the reason why it holds babies in position better than other convertible car seats on the market that have infant insert cushions.

The seat is produced with a 5 point harness for better hold and since it has lower slots you infant can sit in the seat safely. This convertible can be used from the weight of 4 lbs and for heavier children it is also possible to sit in until they are 70 lbs, then you can change the seat for a bigger convertible or a booster.

The producers stopped using EPP foam as a protection technology against side crashes, instead of that they changed to air cushions. This new technology is called Air Protect Side Impact Technology which leaves wider space for the children’s head and this kind of technology is also used with Infant insert cushions too which are supposed to prevent door intrusion.

Harnesses can be put into the right position very easily and recline positions are set the same way. To set the recline position from which Maxi Cosi Pria 70 has 3, you only need to pull a red handle on the bottom of the seat, you cannot miss it. Recline 2 or 3 is used when the seat is used in rear facing position, in forward facing position 2 is usually used, but if the child is over 40lbs of weight recline 1 must be used. The only problem with this that it is very difficult to find the best angle because car seats differ in them, and the TinyFit insert also has an inner incline which positions the insert itself and sometimes because of this the recline position of the seat is not proper.

Maxi Cosi Pira 70 is equipped with premium push in LATCH connectors that can be easily used in new cars with the lower anchors, and they can be hidden in storages as well as the tether when they are not in use.

The cover of the seat is mostly polyester and it is very well padded. It provides all the comfort your kids need. The cover is removable and washable but once the seat is installed well it is very hard to put it back to the seat. The TinyFit baby insert has an individual removable cover too, and it also has a baby hip supporter and a head pillow for better comfort and protection. The only part of the padding that has no removable cover is the head rest so be careful not to tear it.

Maxi Cosi Pira 70 has 6 years of expiry and it is not advised used after the date stamped on the bottom of the seat or if it was involved in a crash.

It is certified to be used on a plane but, since it is a little bit heavy, you might need a luggage trolley to carry it on board and back.

After the advantages, let’s see the disadvantages of the seat. The biggest disadvantage of the seat is its weight because it is not an easily transportable one. The other thing is that the head rest’s cover is not removable that is why it might get torn if you try to remove it anyway. The last disadvantage which is a big minus, is that the manual contains some contradicting information about the TinyFit.

  • Comfortable
  • Easy to Adjust
  • Easy to install
  • Safe
  • Sturdy
  • Stylish
  • Cup holder is easy to reach and not in the way

All in all I would say that this seat is fantastic and besides some negative points this is a premium category seat and it’s totally worth purchase it.
